We all need an internet browser to help us navigate the internet, and there are a plethora of options out there to choose from, some are better than others, often by a considerable amount. In this article we are going to look at the most popular internet browsers in the world, and then take a look at why one particular one outstrips the others in terms of ‘greatness’. So without further ado, lets kick off proceedings with the most popular browser in the world.
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer is without a doubt one of the most popular internet browsers in the world. That isn’t because it is brilliant or anything, it is because it comes preinstalled on every single Windows Computer, and thus it quickly becomes the ‘default’ browser for most people. That’s not to say it isn’t bad though, it does its job well however, and the security issues it presented in the past seem to be ‘patched up’. I wouldn’t suggest it as your main browser however, it is far too clunky and slows down your computer.
Firefox
Firefox is the successor to the previous ‘biggest browser’ in the world, Netscape Navigator. This is perhaps one of the most popular browsers in the world at the moment, or at least a lot of people I know use it. The main reason for this is that it can be ‘extended’, i.e. you can add brand new features to the browser, for example, ad blocking or checking the page rank of a website (if you are into Search Engine Optimization), this used to be my browser of choice until I found Chrome.
Safari
I don’t anticipate that Safari will ever be popular amongst PC users, perhaps because it was originally a Mac-only browser. This piece of software, developed by Apple does have a number of handy features however. This includes a better rendering engine to increase the speed that pages load, as well as JavaScript processor which is much faster than Internet Explorer. It also allows easy browsing of websites that you have previously visited, and your bookmarks.
Opera
This used to be my browser of choice before I converted to Firefox, I am not sure why, I believe I was recommended it. There are a number of features that come as standard in Opera which are not included in other web browsers, this includes ‘mouse gestures’. The reason why they are not included is because they consume a lot of resources in order to function, which slows down the computer. It has never really grasped a market share due to its ad-supported nature up until recently. However, there are a few people that love the features in Opera, and they certainly wouldn’t change their mind.
Google Chrome
This is by far the best browser in the world, and it is still only the ‘new kid on the block’. It has only been around for a couple of years but it is gobbling up market share like there is no tomorrow. It includes a special rendering engine to make websites load blisteringly fast, perhaps one of the best features. However, it isn’t clunky at all, in fact, it is simplicity defined, and the look of the browser is beautiful when you open it up, a far cry from Internet Explorer. It probably has some of the best error handling out of all of the browsers, and it runs each tab as a separate process, which means any errors in a website will not knock all the others out of commission. This has also been shown to be the most secure browser of the lot.
